Dynamic positioning (DP)

Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems onboard offshore vessels enable the vessel to maintain a fixed heading or position automatically. The vessels thrusters are constantly active to balance the external environmental forces (wind, wave, current etc.) exerted on the vessel to maintain position. DP systems are classed differently based upon their capabilities. DP0 systems are capable of manual position control and automatic heading control under specified maximum environmental conditions. DP1 systems are capable of automatic and manual position and heading control under specified maximum environmental conditions. DP2 systems are capable of automatic and manual position and heading control under specified maximum environmental conditions, during and following any single fault excluding loss of a compartment. (Two independent computer systems). DP3 systems are capable of automatic and manual position and heading control under specified maximum environmental conditions, during and following any single fault including loss of a compartment due to fire or flood. (At least two independent computer systems with a separate back-up system separated by A60 class division).
